From Good to Great Management – Episode #87

by Richard Wilson on August 1, 2011

The following video is borrowed from our BusinessTraining.com platform and was originally recorded for our business management training program.  In this video, I give a review of Jim Collins’ From Good to Great.  This is a fantastic book on business management and it incorporates a lot of rigorous, thorough analysis to form a great formula for taking your business from good to great.

Video Transcript/Summary: The strategies and tips provided within this video module include:

  1. Good is the enemy of great.  By this, Collins means that if a company is performing satisfactorily then there is little push to take the business to the next level.
  2. Level 5 leadership.  This concept is about having a leader who is a strong visionary who wants the best for the business but who is also very humble.
  3. My favorite idea from this book is the three circles idea: one circle is what you’re passionate about, what makes you money is the second circle and the last one is what you could be best at.  Only say “yes” to ideas that fit in the intersection of these circles.
  4. Another important idea is the culture of accountability which will help your team be really strong.

From Good to Great by Jim Collins is one of my all-time favorite management books and I highly-recommend it to anyone who wants to get better at managing a business.

Thanks for joining us, and I will see you again soon,
