Public Relations Commitment – Episode #162

by Richard Wilson on August 20, 2011

The following video is borrowed from our platform and was originally recorded for our public relations training program.   The psychological principle of commitment can be a powerful public relations tactic.  In this video, you will learn how the commitment principle applies to public relations.

Video Transcript/SummaryThe strategies and tips provided within this video module include:

  1. Commitment is a psychological principle that if you someone starts on a path they are very likely to continue on that path rather than pursue an alternative later.
  2. One application of the commitment principle is through article publishing and getting mentioned in a popular publication.  Go to the low hanging fruit, i.e. the publications that you have already established a working relationship with.
  3. If you’re providing information to media professionals you will be seen as a resource and editors will start coming to you for your valuable information and insights.
  4. Another way to leverage commitment in your public relations is to think about what you want to market or highlight within a press release or media story.
  5. Consider offering a free resource that will establish a connection with your readers in your press release.
The commitment principle can be a really valuable tool in your public relations work.  By establishing a connection with publications, providing useful information and making sure that you first establish a connection with your press release readers before selling them something expensive, you can use the commitment principle to improve your public relations.

Thanks for joining us, and I will see you again soon,
